Art rock embellished with strings - cinematic compositions full of sweeping elegant darkness and hypnotic delicate intensity. Stems were formed in the small town of Huddersfield, UK in 2011 by founder member and composer John Dorr, with the idea of mixing classical composition and instruments with rock.
The music is often described as 'Cinematic' and sometimes labelled Post- Rock or Neo- Classical. In 2018 the band relocated to Nuremberg. Since 2013 they have toured Europe several times and developed a following based on their reputation for intense and beautiful concerts, often performing with local string players to expand the sound. Performing shows with Russian Circles, Tides from Nebula, Pelican. The band has received commissions from B.F.I to create new live soundtracks for the silent films of Georges Méliés. Which has been performed in many Cinema's and events such as a short tour with British based DJ Yoda.
Zwinkelman sounds like a distant summer storm on a warm summer evening. Rich acoustic instrumentals, direct sound, and open tunings are combined to create an intimate atmosphere. Polyrhythms, compound meters and scattered dissonances are all interspersed to form a contrasted, yet harmonious experience. This quiet voice of progression was laid down by the two guitar players, Josip Pavlov and Dominik Lutter, in Munich back in 2015. With only their two acoustic guitars, they shy away from the bombastic and artificial production that permeates modern rock music, but the effect is a voice stronger than any “wall of sound” or “noise fountain” could ever be.
